Codicote Table Tennis Club
Well, this is it. After years of talking about getting a Table Tennis Club in Codicote, we’ve taken the plunge and gone for it - Hertfordshire’s youngest club started on Monday August 24th 2009!!
Initial soundings have been very positive (nearly 30 people turned up for the first Club Night and there has been continued interest ever since).
Being a competitive bunch we have entered into a local league (SHAW League - Division 4) and are in fourth place at the moment (out of ten teams) and created a bit of a ripple in the Cup competition in late November by beating a team two divisions above us. Alongside this, the Club are about to seek membership of the English Table Tennis Federation.
A lot of the fledgling membership has been drawn from Codicote Lawn Tennis Club although players have also been attracted from other clubs in the village and, indeed, include players who are completely new to Codicote sport. One of the great things about the Club is how we have managed to immediately integrate competitive juniors into the squad and they are providing a strong backbone to the team in our first season.
Club nights are Mondays but the apparent demand means that we will be probably extend this to two nights per week – one for competitive table tennis and one for more social play.
In terms of infrastructure, we have a small Committee of four people who are running things at the moment and fees have been set in the first year at a very competitive £25 (£40 for family membership) to maximise interest.
And that’s really about it with very little else to say at the moment. A very promising beginning with both the hope and expectation of sustaining the good start and being a Club that people will recognise and see as part of normal Hertfordshire table tennis life.
Long may it continue!
