IT’S ALL GOING ON AT THE SOCIAL CLUB

Whilst all eyes are on the progress of fundraising for the new John Clements Sports & Community Centre, of course the life of the existing Social Club marches on relentlessly.
The last few weeks have seen a whole range of events geared both at entertaining those in the village and raising money for the new Centre.
Of these, probably the biggest was the Semi-Tones Cabaret evenings which played to two packed houses in March. For those who remember, Codicote was, for a ten year period, entertained by the Two Tones Group (led by Tony Lutkin and Tony Shears – hence the name) who sang, danced and acted their way through music hall, alternative comedy, West End musicals and a dizzying range of sketches on an annual basis.
This came to an end once Mr. Shears moved to Norway but his son-in-law, Angus Tillson, and the remaining Tony (hence the new name – Semi Tones) got together with some of the others to revive the tradition this year.
The format changed to a more intimate cabaret style with the audience tucking into an excellent three course meal (that’s what they said anyway!) and much of the performing going on around them. The feedback was really positive and, as well as plans already being made for a longer run next year, budding singers have been making approaches to the Lutkin-Tillson combo about performing next time. Watch this space!
The Social Club has also hosted a Poker Night and two Race Nights to raise funds and, in the next few weeks, there are two major live music events coming – Pretzel Logic on Saturday 10th April and The Hometown Boys on Saturday 24th April.
In between there is the Annual Tennis Club Quiz on Saturday 17th April (just for fun – yeah, right!), the inaugural Codicote Table Tennis Championships (Sunday 18th April) and a really big event for the whole village – Codicote Games Day.
Codicote Games Day has been started in honour of George Grice who died three years ago and was a great supporter of the Social Club. A cup has been donated by his wife, Margaret, and ten teams will throw themselves into a bewildering array of games ranging from Darts to New Age Curling and Welly Wanging to Tri Golf! More details to follow.
And that’s about it for time being – non stop action (bearing in mind there’s also football matches, tennis tournaments, bingo nights, dance sessions, yoga classes and bowls matches happening over the next few weeks).
Hope to see you there!
